Can you learn bass without learning guitar first?

Yes. You can start directly on bass guitar without learning guitar first. Bass has its own musical role, and lessons can build the foundations on the instrument you actually want to play.

Start with the bass line

Bass connects rhythm and harmony. A few well-timed notes can support a song more effectively than a busy part played unevenly. Beginners can work on a clear sound, a comfortable playing position and a steady pulse before adding complexity.

What will a beginner work on?

Useful foundations include fretting a note cleanly, plucking consistently, moving between strings and stopping unwanted strings from ringing. These skills connect to short bass lines and real music, rather than remaining separate exercises.

Is bass easier than guitar?

The first musical tasks are different. Fewer strings do not make bass a lesser instrument or remove the need for timing, listening and control. Choose it because you enjoy its sound and role, rather than as a compulsory stepping stone to guitar.

What if I already play guitar?

Some fretboard knowledge can transfer. The next step is developing a convincing bass approach: controlling note length, muting, leaving space and listening to how the part works with drums and the rest of the song. Lessons can focus on those differences.

Do I need a bass before starting?

You do not need your own instrument to start studio lessons. Mention what you own when enquiring so arrangements can be confirmed. Dave can advise before a purchase.
