More groove. More confidence.

Bass is its own instrument, with its own way of thinking. We start with clean notes, comfortable fretting and plucking, and a pulse you can rely on. Learn how to move between strings, control unwanted noise and keep a line consistent.

As your playing develops, connect the notes on the fretboard with chords and song structures. Explore how bass and drums work together, when to leave space and how a small rhythmic change can transform a groove. Real music keeps the technical work connected to something worth playing.

Meet your teacher

25+ years of playing. Your goals first.

Dave Rutherford brings more than 25 years of experience playing musical instruments, alongside a career on stage and in the studio. His background includes Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California, international performances and recording sessions in Los Angeles.

You do not need that experience to begin. Bring your curiosity, your favourite music and a willingness to try. Lessons combine practical skills with clear things to practice between sessions.

Before your first lesson

I already play guitar. Will that help?

Some fretboard knowledge will transfer, but bass has a different musical role. Lessons can help you develop the touch, muting, timing and space that make a convincing bass part.

What should I include in my enquiry?

Tell Dave your instrument, playing experience, musical interests and preferred days. For a child, include their age. Say whether you would prefer studio or online lessons and whether graded exams interest you.

Can I learn without taking exams?

Absolutely. Exams are optional. You can focus on favourite songs, developing confidence, playing with others or simply enjoying a new skill.
