Do you need your own instrument to start lessons?

You do not need your own instrument to start studio lessons at Six String Studio. Dave can advise before you buy, and loan guitars and ukuleles may be available by arrangement. Online lessons need an agreed instrument and setup at your end.

Try learning before committing to a purchase

If you are interested in guitar, bass, ukulele or drums but have not bought equipment, mention this in your enquiry. We can discuss what you would like to try and confirm the practical arrangements for your lesson. You do not need to guess what to buy just to get started.

How do instrument loans work?

Guitar and ukulele loans are possible, subject to availability. Ask about the instrument available and the arrangements before relying on a loan for home practice. Loan availability does not mean every instrument or size is always available.

Ask for advice before buying

Tell me who the instrument is for, their experience, the music they like and the budget you have in mind. Comfort and playability deserve as much attention as appearance. For guitar, a difficult setup can make an otherwise suitable instrument frustrating to learn on.

For a child, check the fit before choosing a size. For an adult, choose acoustic or electric around the sound you want to make rather than a rule that everyone must start on acoustic. We can discuss ukulele size, bass options or a sensible drum-practice setup too.

Think about practice as well as lessons

Starting without ownership removes the need to buy immediately. Over time, access to an appropriate instrument helps you practise between sessions. Discuss your home situation, space and available equipment so we can plan useful work rather than assume you already have everything.

What about online lessons?

You will need a suitable instrument, reliable internet and a camera and sound arrangement agreed with Dave. Online lessons last 60 minutes, cost £40 and are paid in advance. Studio instrument provision does not automatically provide equipment for an online lesson.

Talk through your starting point

Send your instrument, experience and preferred days or times. For a child, include their age. You can start with a question.
