Starting guitar as an adult

You can start guitar as an adult without previous experience, and you do not need to take exams. At Six String Studio in Stockton-on-Tees, lessons begin with your starting point and the music you want to play.

Do I need to be musical already?

You do not need to arrive knowing chords, reading music or playing a song. Your first enquiry can simply explain what you enjoy listening to and that you would like to try. If you have played before, tell me what feels comfortable and where you feel stuck. There is no need to prepare a performance.

Choose the sound you want to make

You do not have to learn acoustic guitar before electric. Interest matters: the instrument that makes you want to pick it up is a useful starting point. Comfort, instrument size and a playable setup matter too. Ask before buying if you are unsure. You do not need your own instrument to start studio lessons; loan guitars may be available by arrangement.

What can we work on?

Beginners can work on holding the guitar comfortably, making clear notes, changing between useful chords and keeping a steady rhythm. Returning players may need a different starting point: rebuilding confidence, improving timing or working through a particular technique. Songs give those skills a purpose.

Make practice manageable

Tell me how much time you realistically have. We can choose a small task that fits your current level, such as moving between two chords in time or playing a short riff evenly. A focused few minutes repeated regularly can be more useful than trying to cover everything in one long session. Progress varies; there is no fixed deadline for learning a song.

Enjoyment is a valid goal

Grades and performance goals are available if you want them. You can also learn simply because you would enjoy making music. Lessons are one to one, so your priorities can shape what we work on.
