Learning resources / Six String Studio
Can you start drum lessons without a drum kit?
You do not need to own a drum kit to start studio lessons at Six String Studio in Stockton-on-Tees. The studio has an electronic kit. Before buying equipment, discuss what you want to learn and how practice at home could work.
What can you learn at the studio?
Beginners can work on grip, controlled strokes, listening and a steady pulse, then connect hands and feet into manageable grooves. We can slow coordination down and build the parts together rather than expect a complete pattern immediately.
Can a practice pad help?
A practice pad can support stick-control and rhythm work. It does not replace every aspect of a full kit: learning how hands and feet move between the different parts needs an appropriate setup. Ask which practice tasks make sense with the equipment you can access.
Should I buy an electronic or acoustic kit?
Start by discussing space, sound, budget and what you need to practise. You do not have to make that purchase before your first studio lesson. Dave can advise on equipment choices so the setup supports your learning rather than becoming an unnecessary first hurdle.
How do lessons develop?
As coordination becomes more comfortable, we can connect grooves with songs and work on fills, dynamics and returning confidently to the beat. Timing and listening remain useful at every level. Progress depends on your starting point and practice; there is no fixed number of lessons that applies to everyone.
What do online drum lessons require?
Online tuition needs an agreed kit, camera and sound arrangement at your end. It is different from attending the studio and using the kit there. Video lessons through Zoom or Teams last 60 minutes, cost £40 and are paid in advance.
Ask before you buy
Tell Dave your experience, musical interests and what equipment or practice space you already have. Studio lessons cost £20 for 30 minutes or £40 for 60 minutes.
Talk through your starting point
