Learning resources / Six String Studio
Can children start music lessons at four or five?
Children can start lessons at Six String Studio from around four to five years old. The right starting point depends on the child and instrument, so discuss their age and interests with Dave before booking. Parents are welcome to sit in lessons.
Readiness matters as well as age
Tell me what has sparked your child’s interest. Do they enjoy making rhythms, singing along or trying an instrument? What would they like to play? A short conversation helps us discuss an appropriate starting point without expecting them to arrive with musical knowledge.
Which instrument should we choose?
Acoustic and electric guitar, bass, ukulele and drums are taught at the studio. Suitability is individual: comfort, instrument size and the child’s interests all matter. A smaller instrument is not automatically the right choice for every child. Ask for advice before purchasing.
Can I stay for the lesson?
Yes. Parents are welcome to sit in. I hold an enhanced DBS check and public liability insurance, and have taught in Teesside schools and privately for over 23 years. Raise access requirements or other practical questions when enquiring so we can discuss them before your visit.
How long should the lesson be?
The 20-minute studio option costs £15 and is for primary-school pupils under ten only. Other studio options are £20 for 30 minutes and £40 for 60 minutes. Age alone does not decide the best length; discuss your child’s needs and eligibility before booking.
Do we need to buy an instrument first?
No instrument purchase is needed to start studio lessons. I can advise on purchases, and loan guitars and ukuleles may be possible, subject to availability and agreed arrangements. We should also discuss how practice at home could work.
What should I include in the enquiry?
A parent or guardian should contact me with the child’s age, preferred instrument, any previous experience and days or times that usually work. Lessons are available seven days a week, subject to availability. Directions are shared when a lesson is arranged.
Talk through your starting point
